Disclaimer
PlainBizBench makes public IRS, Census, and SBA business data legible as industry benchmarks. Please read how to use this information responsibly before acting on it.
Informational Only, Not Professional Advice
PlainBizBench is for general informational purposes only. Nothing on this site is financial, tax, accounting, investment, legal, or business advice. Industry benchmarks describe aggregated averages across public datasets; they are not a recommendation, valuation, or forecast for any specific business. For guidance on your own situation, pricing, compensation, lending, taxes, or growth - consult a qualified accountant, financial advisor, or other licensed professional.
Benchmarks Are Aggregates, Individual Businesses Vary
Every figure on PlainBizBench is an aggregate computed across all businesses in a NAICS industry category. A single firm can differ sharply from the industry average depending on its size, age, geography, business model, management, and market conditions. A small startup will usually look nothing like an industry average that includes large, established companies. Treat these numbers as a reference point, not a prediction of how any one business will perform.
Not Affiliated With Any Government Agency
PlainBizBench is an independent publication. We are not affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Small Business Administration, or any other government agency. We republish and analyze their public data; we do not speak for them and do not issue official statistics.
Data Reflects Federal Release Cycles
Figures on PlainBizBench reflect the most recent source files we have processed, with the reference year shown on every data page. Census County Business Patterns data typically lags 12–18 months and IRS Statistics of Income data lags two to three years behind the reference year. Source data may contain errors, may be outdated, or may be suppressed by the IRS to protect taxpayer privacy. Always confirm important figures directly at IRS.gov and Census.gov before relying on them for a consequential decision.
